making a systemic change with Circular economy
Global resource extraction and waste generation are accelerating at unsustainable rates. In consumer goods alone, over USD 2.6 trillion in material value is discarded annually. Traditional linear models –take, make, dispose – are no longer viable. The solution? Circular Economy.
A circular economy offers a regenerative alternative, designing out waste and keeping materials in use for as long as possible. By shifting toward circular principles, economies can significantly reduce the need for virgin resource extraction, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and build resilience against supply chain disruptions. It is a systemic change that not only supports environmental goals but also unlocks new opportunities for innovation, efficiency and sustainable growth.
Robeco’s Circular Economy Equities strategy invests in companies driving the transition to a circular economy. The fund invests in companies that foster resource-efficient business models regarding the production and consumption of consumer goods aligned with circular economy principles. These include businesses that actively contribute to the reduction of waste, develop material that can be reused or recycled, manage efficient logistics and waste management systems, or promote eco-friendly nutrition and lifestyles. Through this approach, the fund supports a systemic shift in how goods are produced and consumed.
The strategy is structured around four core clusters:
-
Redesign Inputs: Companies replacing virgin materials with renewable, recyclable or biodegradable alternatives. This includes sustainable packaging, renewable feedstock, building materials and precision farming technologies.
-
Enabling Technologies: Businesses providing digital, logistical and product-as-a-service solutions that enhance resource efficiency and reduce waste. Examples include ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT)-enabled supply chains, predictive maintenance and smart manufacturing platforms.
-
Circular Use: Firms extending product lifetimes and promoting reuse through sustainable sourcing and modular design, and by sharing economy models. This includes sectors like fashion, household goods and nutrition.
-
Loop Resources: Companies focused on recovery, repair and recycling. These include maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) services, waste sorting technologies, and industrial recyclers that enable closed-loop systems.

Protecting the environment with Circular waste disposal
One of Robeco's portfolio companies is a US-based provider of environmental and industrial services, specialising in hazardous waste disposal for businesses, small-scale waste generators, and government entities at all levels.
It recovers cleaning solvents and oils, among other hazardous materials. In 2023, it recycled 7.3 million tons of waste materials, significantly contributing to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.5 by reducing overall waste generation through prevention, recycling, and reuse. Additionally, its efforts support SDG 12.4 by helping to minimise the release of hazardous substances into the environment.
